Masters Nation Encontro in Belfast 2011: background
17/12/10
The Beat Carnival in association with Gandaia Arts
invites you to the Masters Nation finale in Belfast in June 2011
A little bit about Gandaia Arts and Masters Nation
Gandaia Arts, in partnership with Ziriguidum Productions, toured a successful 1st Edition of MASTERS NATION Project in 2010, which reached 22 groups of Maracatu in 15 European cities. Masters Nation II, this time in partnership with Beat Carnival, will culminate in a weekend of workshops and a presentation in the University Quarter on Saturday 18th at 7pm. Check out Gandaia's own website for more information on the company and the Masters Nation project.
Organisation This project has been developed through the creation of a network of producers and group leaders, including the three nations taking part and five other nations, with researchers and anthropologists. In the past, maracatu de baque virado was a focus of discussion and argument between the nations, but a number of maracatu groups have been working together to promote better cultural structure and improvement within these nations. The network that organised this project plans to make this an annual event, with the objective of engaging other masters. We propose that each year, there will be three different masters from Brazil. The Nations 2010 The three nations welcomed at this MASTERS NATION are Maracatu Nacão Leão Coroado, Estrela Brilhante de Igarassú and Maracatu Cambinda Africano, which have been in existence for more than 100 years. The masters were chosen based on the criteria of the participant groups, and the difference between these three maracatu nations is immense, with each group possessing its own music style and formation. The Nations 2011 The three nations welcomed at the 2011 MASTERS NATION tour are: Mestre Tete from Maracatu Almirante do Forte Mestre Alfonso from Maracatu Leão Coroado Anderson Nogueira from Nacao Pernambuco (Dance) These new masters are reflecting the traditional aspects of Maracatu culture combined with the dance elements of Anderson Nogueira who will be on the tour also.
Belfast: June 2011
On June 16th -19th 2011, Belfast hosts the first Masters Nation encontro, inviting attendees from around Europe to Belfast.
This is a training opportunity for the Maracatu Enthusiasts in Europe to come train with the 3 esteemed Maracatu teachers from Pernambuco, Brazil. Master-classes will allow teachers, facilitators and students the chance for extended contact time with the Mestres of the Masters Nation project, developing into an open event for Maracatu players from Europe to come and study in Belfast. An important part of the focus for the year 2011 is the Master-classes in both the music and the dance of Maracatu.
Masterclasses:
Join us for all day Friday and Saturday for training broadening your knowledge of the drumming styles of the two visiting Nations, and the dance style of Anderson Nogueira of Nacao Pernambuco. There is a small fee of £35to cover the expenses for hosting this event for the two days. We would like you to participate in either the drumming or the dance aspects of our programme, the intense sessions planned providing a much needed learning experience for the leaders and dedicated Maracatu enthusiasts of Europe's Maracatu groups.
Workshop Participants:
We are working hard to try and get you , the volunteer participants cheap deals in food and places to stay in order for you to make this journey to the edge of Europe with little difficulty. You will find Belfast a warm hearted and inviting city and the main attraction will be the opportunity to play with participants from all around Europe who have been involved in making the Masters Nation project happen.
So far we have representatives of 9 Maracatu groups attending the training - plus honorary individuals. There is still room for more in the fantastic training rooms of the Queen's University Belfast's Students Union. This great venue is very close to the Hostels, a short bus ride away from the Beat Carnival Centre and has fantastic facilities for our use.
Timetable
Thursday 16-Jun-2011: - Evening master-classes with Mestre Alfonso and Mestre Tete, and Anderson Nogueira in dance.
Friday 17th June 2011 - All day masterclasses with the Mestres in music and dance. An evening session to welcome the participants of the Masters Nation Finale.
Saturday: 18-Jun-2011: - All day masterclasses followed by a street presentation of the Masters Nation Finale.
Sunday: 19-Jun- 2011: - Lunch and farewells.
How will it change for the future and what are the interests for those who live for Maracatu in Brazil compared with those who have newly discovered the Maracatu in Europe. Through dialogue and discussions over lunch, we hope to discover what makes each other motivated to learn this new music style and to acknowledge and respect those who work to develop their own spheres of cultural influence in Brazil and Europe. With Europe's multi cultural society with its various influences, how do we see the development of Maracatu progressing and what are the important parts that we must take with us as its popularity, and our understanding of Pernambucano culture develop.
