Welcome to the Masters Nation project in association with Gandaia Arts
For the finalé of Masters Nation II, The Beat Carnival are organising masterclasses and a performance in Belfast with the Mestres of Pernambuco, Brazil
MASTERS NATION ENCONTRO 2011

The Beat Carnival is inviting European Maracatus participating in the Masters Nation 2011 tour to come together for further training and a combined performance in the annual Belfast City Carnival. Maracatu masterclasses will be with Mestre Tete and Mestre Alfonso. For dancers, there will be classes with Anderson Nogueira.
1. The Belfast Masterclass of the 2011 tour will be on Thursday night, 16th June. Individuals or groups from elsewhere can join this training session with the Belfast drummers.
Cost: £15
2. The main Encontro programme begins on Friday 17th morning. Masterclasses will develop and refine the music that has been taught on the tour. You will spend all day Friday and Saturday rehearsing with the Mestres of Maracatu to create a showcese for a Saturday evening street performance and evening show.
The cost for the Friday to Sunday Encontro is £35.
The Beat Initiative (Beat Carnival) is minimising the training fees for participants by subsidising Encontro costs through its Liftoff project. The Liftoff project is funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to create a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Liftoff is part of the Connections Programme which is managed by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
Further details of the programme and the fee breakdown are on the registration form: email damian@beatcarnival.com
Spirit of Encontro… and Connections
The Beat Initiative (Beat Carnival) is hosting the Maracatu Encontro as part of the 2011 Belfast City Carnival and Beat’s Liftoff project in the Connections programme.
The reason we are all gathering is a love of Maracatu; a chance to work closely with the Mestres of Maracatu dance and music – and with each other; and to present a new, fun and challenging music performance in Beat’s Belfast City Carnival and Liftoff celebrations.
We hope that the encontro will inspire further connections in 2012 and coming years.
Liftoff is a skills development; art & sport connections; and community engagement project that Beat created for the LTUK Connections programme. It has been operating for the past three years. Immediately following the Saturday carnival parade, an afternoon performance and party event in the grounds of our beautiful City Hall will be the culmination of the project: it will be… Liftoff
The Liftoff project is funded by the Legacy Trust UK Connections Programme, which is managed by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland
Workshops ‐ Rehearsal
Friday’s daytime masterclass workshop will develop and refine two of the music arrangements that have been taught by the Mestres throughout the European tour. This will prepare for the special Liftoff performance as part of the Carnival event at Belfast City Hall. The master class on Friday evening will refresh the content of the Master’s Nation Tour for The Belfast City Carnival parade performance. Dancers will work on traditional dance for the Maracatu Pageant.

You can book flights to Belfast or to Dublin. There are good, regular bus links between the cities. Be careful: some airlines have extra charges for musical instruments!
