Important news about the Belfast Carnival
Beat is shocked and disappointed to be told that we have not been awarded the Belfast City Council Arts Unit contract for June’s carnival programme and parade event. This is nothing to do with the quality of the Parade or our work: it is simply a Council process.
The company that has taken on the contract, is Smallworld with ArtsEkta. They may be in touch with you. We want to clarify that we have no relationship with this year’s Lord Mayor’s Parade in June. After putting so many years’ effort into Carnival, we hope that the June event will be a success and a celebratory occasion for all. Perhaps the Belfast Carnival will return in 2012. That remains to be seen: meanwhile Beat will still be running workshops and opening-up arts and community participation in many ways.
Beat Carnival as an organisation is now engaged in urgent re-planning and re-visioning. Beat will re-structure and will implement alternative ways to continue our work with individuals, local communities and arts partners. There will be further news on this next week, after we have finished work on tomorrow’s St Patrick’s Day Carnival Parade. Very likely: we will create a participatory event later in the summer and in the autumn will hold an international seminar on ‘Carnival – The Importance of Community Celebration’.
If you would like further clarification, please contact me personally. I will be very willing to answer any questions that you have.
