Beat’s Maracatu Drum and Dance Encontro, 16 - 19 June 2011
Join the performance and party: from 6.30pm Saturday 18th June
It wouldn’t be summer without samba – and the Beat Initiative is again poised to spring to action in the City with a carnival drumming encounter. The ‘Maracatu Encontro’ will have people dancing and playing to Brazilian rhythm from Thursday 16th to Sunday 19th June.
The Maracatu Encontro Event From Thursday night, 16th June, Beat’s dance and drumming tuition will combine the expertise of the Mestres of Pernambuco, Brazil, in delivering a series of masterclasses for experienced drummers and dancers.
On Saturday 18th June
at 6:30pm, an outdoor Maracatu performance will parade from Queen’s University Belfast, along Botanic Avenue, Shaftesbury Square and University Road, finishing at the QUB Students Union.

Background
Maracatu is a dynamic Afro-Brazilian performance, somewhat different to the samba drumming that we have become familiar with, which shares ancient roots with the drumming traditions of these islands. This unique weekend of drumming in Belfast is the finalé of the 2011 Masters Nation Project: a programme that brings leading Brazilian music and dance masters from different carnival cultures to cities across Europe, to share their cultural knowledge and artistic skills. The project is based around dialogue, cultural exchange, performance expertise and at its heart, rhythm! Top-level dancers and drummers will be congregating in Belfast with Beat’s own Beatndrum carnival band: coming from Ireland, UK and Europe to take part in this event alongside the Brazilian Masters of Music and Dance.
