*Light Up Lilliput* - East Belfast Lantern Festival
13/11/08
This year’s Lantern Parade is set to create a truly magical feel. Puppeteers from Brussels and Bologna will host a public workshop at Belfast Carnival Centre on Wednesday 3 December at 7pm, to teach individuals how to create and perform with their own puppets. Local puppet company, Brothers Dimm, who have worked with Sesame Street, will also be there to work with community participants and to perform on the evening. For this Lantern Parade, we’ve introduced a new musical performance – from Salvador in northern Brazil and which goes back to African origins. The simple groove has a soothing affect, blending traditional percussion instruments with song. Youth groups and choirs from Belfast and Armagh will be creating this unique beat during the parade.
Bring out your lantern to light up the streets of Lilliput for Gulliver's wee dander on Saturday 6th December. At 7pm, the big lad will be returning from his Christmas shopping at Belmont. Heading down the Newtownards Road, he'll most likely call in at Ballymacarrett to warm-up and maybe have a wee festive dance with his Lilliputian mates.

Through BelBoBru, one of Beat’s European partnership projects, artists from the Par Tot Parade, Bologna and the Zinneke Parade, Brussels will be taking an active role in sharing skills and developing local talent. They will they assist in preparing puppet creations and rehearsing drumming performances for the lantern parade and finalé. The finalé performance brings together Beat's carnival drummers, European drummers, local traditional musicians and dancers, Moroccan traditional percussionists and Wandsworth Community Association youth group.
The parade starts at 7.00pm and runs until 9.00pm with the finalé performance at the Beat’s Ballymacarrett warehouse, where tea and coffee will be available.
