Beat are inviting groups from across Belfast to create a lively, colourful, carnival parade on Saturday 27 June.

This year’s summer carnival theme is about exploring space. Did you know that 2009 is International Year of Astronomy? In fact that’s just a starting point. Beat plans to go on a journey with the space theme over the next few years: a journey that explores all types of spaces, from outer space to the local space of Belfast City, to move from exploring space, to sharing space.

So make space in your diary on 27 June to Look Up. See what comes out of the unknown, when the carnival parade takes to the streets. There will be stars to follow, bold explorers searching for those stars and flying machines heading off for the planets. Look around too, because there might just be others out there, watching us!

As part of the programme each group can register for 2 x 2 hour carnival arts workshops. Extra sessions may be available depending on the project budget and the number of groups that register for the programme. We will discuss this with you when we are arranging your workshops. By registering for the workshops you are agreeing to participate on the day of the Carnival as a group with your own adequate supervision.

Content of your workshop will be discussed with you once we have received your registration form. If you have specific ideas of your own we would like to hear them so please indicate them on the registration form.

There will be work packs available to give ideas and to explain the overall carnival theme in more detail.

The worksheets will have instructions to make props & head-dresses to fit in with the overall design of the parade.

Please indicate on the registration form if you would like to receive a work pack.

To register for the programme and the event, you just need to complete a form by 15 May, which you can get by emailing beat@belfastcarnival.com or ringing 028 9043 4767.

Once we have received your registration, someone from the Beat team will be in touch to discuss your participation in more detail.

Belfast City Carnival is supported by Belfast City Council, Arts Council Northern Ireland, National Lottery through the Arts Council Northern Ireland and the Department of Social Development.
