The Maracatu Masterclass weekender on the 22 and 23 May 2010, held at Mandela Hall at QUBSU, Belfast was a huge success. 20 students from different backgrounds over the course of the weekend attended the classes. Four Leaders from Beatndrum, Dance NI, Samboeire Sligo and Carnival Creations developed movements and styles of Northeastern Brasil’s Maracatu tradition.
The classes were productive and easy going and a sense of ownership of the movements was developed. Classes were well attended, and at the end the group along with the aid of six percussionists, went into Botanic Gardens and showcased the movements and dance learned over the weekend, gaining new interest with the Sunday sunbathers.
